This is a quick read which is not easy to put down, but I found myself reading slowly in order to absorb its enormity.

It is at once a look at: the tragedy of 9/11, the workings of the human mind/spirit as it experiences this level of trauma, the sudden realization/affirmation of what is really important in life, the role of religious belief in the life of one who had firm religious belief before living through these events…. all in an amazingly short span of writing.

The gravity of the story is retold through beautiful writing. Putting this into the written word to be read by others is gutsy, and should be respected. I found myself nodding at her recognition that the firefighters probably knew they weren’t coming back…. I always believed that. They appeared to have made a choice. This was not simply a matter of “doing their job”. You could see it in the eyes of the fireman whose haunting photo came from those stairs after the tragedy.

One note: The book is full of bible references, and other religious notations. Although I share neither her specific religion nor her solid religious orientation, in this case, the references did not bother me, nor did I find them intrusive in her telling of her story.

Thank you to the author for her sharing as we approach the tenth anniversary.

I had to pause from reading this and write a review. I appreciate Leslie’s sharing her experience as the WTC has always meant a lot to me. It is so true when she writes that, if you’ve never visited, you’ve been cheated. And if you have, you’ve never left.

This is a beautifully-written, intense account and I will finish it tonight. I cannot tear myself away from it – except to write this review.

Thank you for sharing your traumatic experience. Having jumped from a burning building myself(and thrown my son out without a net), I almost cried at her description of coming down the stairway. I could feel and see everything.

    God bless you.

There are just some books that no matter what you say about them, you know you’ll never do them justice. For me, this is one of those books.

This woman is incredibly brave to have told her story. I just can’t imagine how she did it. Living with what she went through is unbelievable. I loved her honesty and refusal to paint things less ugly than they were. I became so involved with her story, I felt I could see what she saw, smell what she smelled, felt what she felt. The horror of that day came back to me with crystal clarity but with added knowledge.

I think this is a very important book. 9/11 has become just a distant, though horrible, memory to so many people. It’s a good thing to be reminded. We still have men and women serving in wars because of what happened that day and the victims are still struggling to live with the terror they lived through that day. They need to be remembered in our thoughts and prayers.

I commend this author for her courage and am grateful to her for telling her story. My son military son has done three tours and it was good for me to be reminded of why he had to. Overall, riveting story that will have you remembering, sniffling and being grateful for the simple things we all take for granted.

Thank you so much, Leslie Haskin, for sharing your story of survival.
